Qualcomm chip maker is working on an ultrasonic fingerprint fingerprint reader under the screen, called Qualcomm 3D Sonic Sensor. It is thus a mixture of two existing technologies: the fingerprint reader under the screen and the ultrasonic fingerprint reader.
In fact, Qualcomm has been studying this type of technology for years, so it is not considered a new idea. Moreover, the Chinese manufacturer Xiaomi had introduced an ultrasonic fingerprint reader with Qualcomm Sense ID technology in 2016, which proposed the same as the new 3D Sonic Sensor, but now under the screen.
The 3D Sonic Sensor uses ultrasound to penetrate, through the mobile phone’s glass, a 3D image of the finger. Therefore, it is a technology that offers more security compared to biometrics based on 2D fingerprint photography. In particular, ultrasounds pass through any layer of water or oil, so it guarantees its use with dirty and wet hands.
For its part, Qualcomm has not specified the technical characteristics of this type of ultrasonic fingerprint sensor compared to the old Qualcomm Sense ID reader. However, it is known that it is much safer because it is able to identify even the pores of the skin.
